CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Mel was working on putting her bedroom to rights when Jenna stopped by. “How’s it coming?” she asked when Mel let her in.

“I’m making progress.”

“Do you need help?”

“No, you all helped with the hard part.”

Jenna pointed to the kitchen. “Looks like you’ve got the kitchen done.” She walked over to the counter where Mel had set out her vintage cookie jar and gave the ceramic pig a pat on the head. “This makes it look like home.”

“It’ll be more like home when I have a chance to bake some cookies for it,” Mel said. “Would you like something to drink? I have plenty of pop leftover from Saturday.”

“No, I’m fine. I can’t stay long anyway,” Jenna said and settled on the couch.

Obviously her girl wanted to talk. Mel took a seat at the opposite end. “How’s everything at the Driftwood Inn? You don’t need me yet, do you?”

Of course, if she did Mel would drop what she was doing and go over. One of the lures of moving to the beach had been the opportunity to be useful.

“I can manage for now,” Jenna said, “but I could use you on July third. We’re going to be busy with people checking in, and I have three massages scheduled for that day.”

“I’m happy to help,” Mel said. “Are you all booked up now?”

“We just filled our last room.” Jenna made a face.

Ah, here was the reason for the visit. “That’s a good thing, isn’t it?” Mel asked.

“In this case, not really. It’s Winston.”

“Oh.”

Mel wasn’t sure what else to say. Jenna hadn’t exactly enjoyed her cousin’s last visit to Moonlight Harbor. The fact that Aunt Edie didn’t like him also affected Jenna’s attitude.

It was a shame, really. He and Jenna and Celeste had happily played together as children when the families met up at the beach. But, sadly, where Jenna had grown up to become responsible and hardworking, Winston had turned into a mooch. His job history was spotty and his familial loyalty was suspect, especially when it came to Aunt Edie. Still, he was family. What could you do?

“He’s only coming to suck up to Aunt Edie and tear me down. Last time he was here he told me I was in over my head.”

“This time he’ll see that you aren’t,” Mel said.

“Even if he does he’ll never admit it. I’m sure he’ll find something to complain about no matter what room I give him, and I know he’s going to expect to get one for next to nothing if not for free since he’s family.” Jenna scowled. “But he’s only family when he wants something. Of course he’ll invite himself to our beach party if he gets wind of it.”

“At least you’ll be outdoors and little Win-Win won’t be able to get in the house and terrorize Roger.” Jenna rolled her eyes at the mention of Winston’s son and Mel hurried on. “It’s only for a couple of days, darling.”

“I wish. He’s booked for the whole long weekend. He’d better not think he’s getting a free room at the height of tourist season.
